An anticipated day on the UnitingCare calendar is Pancake Day. Much more than an opportunity to enjoy delicious pancakes, it is a key fund raising event for UnitingCare organisations. Churches and schools teamed with businesses and community groups to raise funds for vulnerable people. This years efforts did not disappoint thanks to the support of the community.
Almost 200 groups took to the frying pans across the state and Penny Pancake made her annual appearance along with UnitingCare Pancake Day Ambassador Rebecca Morse from 10 Eyewitness News.
The flagship event on Flinders Street was jointly hosted by Pilgrim Uniting Church and UCare Gawler. Organisers were delighted in the level of interest shown by the community. They explained that some of the funds raised would go to support the school breakfast program as well as emergency assistance to people in crisis.
Event Coordinator Raelene Benier from UCare Gawler explains,
We have five schools with over 500 children that we serve breakfast to every day. We want to make sure that all the kids have the opportunity for a good breakfast to start their day. They cant function at school when they are really hungry. And the kids are so happy to see us when we come in.
